WHO: Michael D. Johnson Memorial Foundation
WHAT: Michael D. Johnson Memorial Foundation 2021 Scholarships
WHEN: Deadline, May 15, 2021 @ 11:59 p.m. CST
WHY: Benefiting local JPS graduating high school student-athletes.
About the foundation:
The foundation is posthumously named in memory of the late Michael D. Johnson, who was a star student-athlete at Murrah High School and led the Mustangs to a basketball state championship in 2005. Michael was also a standout baseball shortstop and had signed scholarship papers to play baseball at Copiah-Lincoln. That summer at the age of 18, Michael was killed by a drunk driver at the intersection of State St. & Capitol St. In 2008, the city council of Jackson officially renamed the Lakeland Dr. Baseball field (in front of Smith – Wills) ‘Michael D. Johnson Memorial Field’ in his honor. Foundation past and present sponsors: Entergy, Jackson Public Schools, Rainbow Signs, Mars and Steele Trophy, LA Pharma, The Delta Health Alliance, & Bash Brothers Media.
The Michael D. Johnson Memorial Foundation awards an annual $1500 college scholarship to one recipient and three $250 book scholarships to 3 additional student-athletes of Jackson Public School. The scholarship deadline paperwork entry is May 15, 2021.
We normally host an annual “5K Walk/Run for Mike” (downtown Jackson) which raises money to benefit the foundation scholarships. Due to the pandemic, our 5K Walk/Run was held virtually in 2020 and will also be virtual for 2021. At this time, the virtual walk/run is scheduled for the week of October 23rd-30th, 2021. Please visit our website, michaeldjohnsonfoundation.org, to donate and sign up for the virtual walk.
We appreciate donations that supports the funding of our scholarships. To date, the foundation has awarded almost $20,000 in scholarship money to JPS students for over 10 years.
